The meeting had been called by no one of them they had called themselves together, each having expressed desire for such a meeting and having asked one of their number to serve as an Intermediary In arriving at a date convenient to all. On that evening the elected heads of seventeen Georgia organization* met around a dinner table in Atlanta. But we shall pick up the story on August 6, 1937. Perhaps the story begins even further baok back when man was first moved to strive for the freedom to govern him self. Or perhaps it began when the First World War changed the United States from a debtor to a creditor nation, with the resulting loss of foreign markets, the need of finding new markets, and the gradual recognition of the market potentialities lying undeveloped in the South an area with vast unmet needs and a per capita income little more than half the national average. Perhaps it began with the ClTll War when Georgia and her slater states, left prostrate, entered Into a colo nial status from which they hare but partly emerged. Perhaps It began two hundred years ago, when Georgia was established as a humane ex periment and men sought haven here from social and economic oppression.
